Whether airway hyperresponsiveness is a symptom of airway inflammation or airway remodeling, or whether it is the cause of long-term loss of lung function, remains controversial. Some investigators have hypothesized that aggressive treatment with anti-inflammatory therapies improves the long-term course of asthma beyond their salutary effects on parameters of asthma control and rates of exacerbation over time. 13 This contention has been supported by an observational study 14 that found long-term exposure to ICS was associated with an attenuation of the accelerated decline in lung function previously reported in asthmatics; more studies are required to substantiate these findings.

One controlled clinical trial with Betaferon in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis and able to walk unaided (baseline EDSS 0 to ) was performed. Patients receiving Betaferon showed a reduction in frequency (30%) and severity of clinical relapses, as well as the number of hospitalisations due to disease. Furthermore, there was a prolongation of the relapse-free interval. There is no evidence of an effect of Betaferon on the duration of relapses or on symptoms in between relapses, and no significant effect was seen on the progression of the disease in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.

Addiction to cortisone was the subject of the 1956 motion picture, Bigger Than Life , produced by and starring James Mason . Though it was a box-office flop upon its initial release, [15] many modern critics hail it as a masterpiece and brilliant indictment of contemporary attitudes towards mental illness and addiction. [16] In 1963, Jean-Luc Godard named it one of the ten best American sound films ever made. [17] John F. Kennedy needed to regularly use corticosteroids such as cortisone as a treatment for Addison's disease . [18]

In controlled and uncontrolled clinical trials involving more than 5000 patients treated with ZYFLO, the overall rate of ALT elevation ≥ 3xULN was %. In these trials, one patient developed symptomatic hepatitis with jaundice , which resolved upon discontinuation of therapy. An additional 3 patients with transaminase elevations developed mild hyperbilirubinemia that was less than three times the upper limit of normal. There was no evidence of hypersensitivity or other alternative etiologies for these findings. In subset analyses, females over the age of 65 appeared to be at an increased risk for ALT elevations. Patients with pre-existing transaminase elevations may also be at an increased risk for ALT elevations (see CONTRAINDICATIONS ).
